Courageous Conversations for Fundraisers: Antidotes to White Supremacy Culture in the Nonprofit Sector
About the Event
Tema Okun defines white supremacy culture as the widespread ideology baked in the beliefs, values, norms and standards of our groups and our communities that teach use both overtly and covertly that whiteness holds value. In her 1999 article, Okun outlined (some) characteristics of white supremacy culture. Throughout her work, she urges us not to use this framework as a weapon but rather as a tool to help us understand the “water in which we are all swimming so that we can collaboratively work together to build and sustain cultures that help us thrive as communities and individuals.”
Whether you are just beginning to grapple with the ways that white supremacy culture has shaped our profession, or are seeking antidotes to overcome white supremacy in your organization, join us for this Courageous Conversation as we continue following her invitation to investigate how these characteristics and qualities lead to disconnection from each other and ourselves.
Note: This Courageous Conversation will pick up where we left off during September’s discussion. Whether you were able to join us then or not, please join us as we seek to find ways to overcome white supremacy culture in the organizations we serve.
